Rachana & Bhava Byron Bay

Structural & Civil: Westera Partners

This pair of houses was designed as cousins, sharing some details and materials, but distinctly different from each other in siting and layout.

Situated on a hill in Byron Bay, they have spectacular views stretching from the bay to the hinterland. Each house has a pool and outdoor living area, but each has a different relationship to its house and site, so the houses feel similar but individual.

Both houses have been designed to use the topography of the site to provide flexible family living with two levels of bedrooms connected by the living level. The lower bedrooms feel grounded in the landscape whilst the upper bedrooms look across town to the hinterland and bay beyond. The living spaces are generously proportioned, filled with light and connected to the covered terrace and pool, acting as the focus around which the rest of the house revolves.

Both houses have strong connections to the landscape and the atmosphere of the spaces changes as the sun and weather patterns move across the landscape.
