Grey’s House, located on the main street of Bangalow, has been restored and extended to provide a new future as a commercial premises. The extension to the rear is a contemporary re-interpretation of the Arts and Crafts style of the original building. As a locally listed building, Grey’s House was required to be painted in heritage colours, the scheme for which is a carefully considered curation of heritage colours, historical data and contemporary preferences.

Grey’s House is named after Dr Grey, the local GP and his wife Sheila Grey, a respected local midwife. Dr Grey ran his practice from the front room and the screened verandah served as the clinic waiting room.

The original architect of the building is unknown but it is likely it was designed by FJ Board in the Federation Bungalow style which was inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain. This influence is found in some of the features such as the coloured glass panels, decorative timber detailing and flared verandah cladding. It is believed that Grey’s House was built around 1908 by local builder AE Beckinsale.
