The brief was to redesign the foyer for Byron Shire Council that enabled the delivery of a contemporary model of customer service. This involved creating workstations in the foyer creating visible activity from the street and giving customers direct access to staff. This concept was a crucial part of the Council’s desire to increase trust between the Council and its community.
Four distinct areas were created, distinguished by their use and identified by the colour coding of the floor finish and joinery. A lowered ceiling over the customer service area and two meeting pod structures were introduced to create delineation, partial enclosure and acoustic comfort for customers and staff.
A legible layout and integrated storage and display areas replaced the excessive signage and clutter of the previous foyer. Security and accessibility requirements were seamlessly integrated into the design to provide a safe workplace and equality of use to all customers.
